Upbeat, folky, funny, neo-beatnik tales of failure, fun, and excess in the wild inner-west are a trademark of the narrative poem-songs (or pongs) sung and strummed by award-winning playwright and poet: Benito Di Fonzo.

 

Suburban Bukowskis feature Benito alongside drummer/vocalist Justine Wahlin (Cloudbird), lead guitarist Pete Fenwick (Cloudbird, Monster Stomp), bassist Mike Sheehan (Dirty Deeds, Twinkling Stars) and Mikey Patterson (Grizzly MacDuff) dropping by for a drink on organ and bass. They are often supported by the visual live action performance art of artist Ant Connolly.

 

​In 2023 Ed Garland (i94 Bar) hailed the Suburban Bukowskis as ‘stand out’ artists of the year: “they always deliver an earthy, witty set”. The Sydney Morning Herald concurs: “Benito Di Fonzo waxes lyrical about money, Marx and the meaning of life.”

 

Their latest album Life is a Gateway Drug was recently launched to a full house at the Townie Hotel, Newtown. Stuart Coupe reviews: “There’s lots to like on this” while King Willy Sounds states: “Very entertaining...reminds me of a charming ramshackle tram of characters winding its way down King Street.”
