Benito Di Fonzo /
Suburban Bukowskis
Upbeat, folky, funny, neo-beatnik tales of failure, fun, and excess in the wild inner-west are a trademark of the narrative poem-songs (or pongs) sung and strummed by award-winning playwright and poet: Benito Di Fonzo.
Suburban Bukowskis feature Benito alongside drummer/vocalist Justine Wahlin (Cloudbird), lead guitarist Pete Fenwick (Cloudbird, Monster Stomp), bassist Mike Sheehan (Dirty Deeds, Twinkling Stars) and Mikey Patterson (Grizzly MacDuff) dropping by for a drink on organ and bass. They are often supported by the visual live action performance art of artist Ant Connolly.
In 2023 Ed Garland (i94 Bar) hailed the Suburban Bukowskis as ‘stand out’ artists of the year: “they always deliver an earthy, witty set”. The Sydney Morning Herald concurs: “Benito Di Fonzo waxes lyrical about money, Marx and the meaning of life.”
Their latest album Life is a Gateway Drug was recently launched to a full house at the Townie Hotel, Newtown. Stuart Coupe reviews: “There’s lots to like on this” while King Willy Sounds states: “Very entertaining...reminds me of a charming ramshackle tram of characters winding its way down King Street.”
